If there's a demand for a product, maybe a "Dutch Auction"  (?) would 
be the way to get them produced.

Everybody that wants one starts ponying up the dough, held in 
escrow.  When it reaches a specific amount, somebody steps in and 
produces 'em.  Or something like that.

If nobody acceptable steps up to the plate, the money reverts to the 'buyers'.
